Desc from S&D Plant propagating by elongate rhizomes, flowering 6-9 dm high. Leaves many, 20-36 cm long; Sheaths elliptic, distinctly wider than the blades, dark purple toward apex, diffusely and minutely brown-lepidote; Blades ligulate, rounded to acute, 2-4 cm wide, usually green except for the dark purple apex, obscurely lepidote. Scape erect, slender, mostly equaling or exceeding the leaves; Scape-bracts densely imbricate, divergent, foliaceous, the upper-bright red. Inflorescence very laxly paniculate, rather few branched, nearly glabrous; Primary bracts much shorter than the branches, the lower subfoliaceous, ample, the upper ovate, apiculate; Branches suberect, lax, to 15 cm long, all simple, the lower bearing sterile bracts at base; Rhachis slender, flexuous. Floral bracts downwardly secund with the flowers, broadly ovate, acute, about equaling the middle of the sepals, straight, more or less carinate, membranaceous, red; Pedicels 3 mm long. Sepals lanceolate or elliptic, broadly acute, mostly 20 mm long, ecarinate, yellow. Petals linear, acute, to 30 mm long, light orange, bearing 2 acute scales at base; Stamens exserted. Type. Foster 399 (holotype GH, isotype US), km 279, near Apiai, Sao Paulo to Curitiba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 24 Aug 1939. DISTRIBUTION. Epiphytic in forest, from near sea level to 1400 m alt, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Sul in southeastern Brazil.
