Plant flowering to 1 m high, sometimes with a short erect stem.
Leaves 20-30 in a fasciculate rosette, all alike, persistent, 3-6 dm long, slightly narrowed but not petiolate, entire;
sheaths subtriangular, large, pale, sparsely furfuraceous;
blades linear, long-attenuate, flat, 12-18 mm wide, glabrous above, furfuraceous beneath at first.
Scape slender, sparsely furfuraceous;
scape-bracts narrowly triangular or lanceolate, long-attenuate, furfuraceous, the upper usually shorter than the internodes.
Inflorescence laxly racemose, to 3 dm long, usually many-flowered;
rhachis sparsely furfuraceous at first.
Floral bracts very narrowly lanceolate, attenuate, 2-3 times shorter than the pedicels;
flowers spreading to reflexed;
pedicels very slender, to 3 cm long.
Sepals very narrowly triangular, attenuate, 19-22 mm long, nearly 4 mm wide, ecarinate or slightly carinate, green, glabrous;
petals acute, about 6 cm long, equally recurved at anthesis, naked, red;
stamens exceeding the petals and long-exserted at anthesis;
filaments straight, red;
ovary 2/3 superior.
Capsule slenderly ovoid, opening nearly to base;
seeds caudate.

Plant flowering 60.0-140.0 cm tall.
Leaf blades linear. long-attenuate, glabrous above and furfuraceous beneath, persistent, homomorphic, entire slightly narrowed above the leaf sheath, 1.2-2.0 cm wide, 30.0-60.0 cm long;
leaf sheath subtriangular, sparsely lepidote, 2.5-4.0 cm long.
Inflorescence simple, lax, usually many-flowered;
rachis red, glabrous to furfuraceous, I5.0-50.0 cm tong.
Scape erect, slender, sparsely furfuraceous;
scape bracts narrowly triangular or lanceolate, attenuate, furfuraceous, usually smaller than the internodes.
Floral bracts narrowly lanceolate, attenuate, three times shorter than the pedicels.
Pedicels very slender, more or less perpendicular to the rachis, 2.5-3.5 cm long.
Sepals narrowly triangular, attenuate, carinate, greenish, glabrous, 1.9-2.2 cm long.
Corolla actinomorphic at the anthesis with petals recurved, red, unappendaged, 5.0-6.0 cm long.
Ovary superior; ovules bicaudate.
Fruit capsule septicide, seed bicaudate.
