"I think you are safer to call your plants carolinae than princeps. Not only is princeps supposed to have more scurf on the back of the leaves but the floral bracts and sepals are supposed to be red. The floral bracts are not easily seen and you have to cut out the inflorescence to examine it! carolinae on the other hand has come to mean many forms of Neoregelia with a red centre. Just check the number of alleged carolinae cultivars in the Register compared to princeps!
So when someone says dogmatically that a plant is Neoregelia princeps just quietly ask what the colour of the sepals are. In most Neos you poke around they are green!"
