DD0217 DNA / New genera
Ed: "Recent DNA analysis has shown many errors in the way Bromeliads have been grouped together in genera.
It has mostly been Tillandsia studied so-far.
In the past a lot of emphasis was placed on flower structure to group into genera, but it has long been suspected this was locking us into mistakes.
Rather than simply transferring species among the old genera, new genera names are being adopted for a clean start.
Interestingly some of my favourites, the intergenerics, will no longer be intergenerics and some plain crosses will become intergenerics !
It will take many years for the new groupings to be adopted.
Past naming corrections are still not adopted after many decades in some collections !
To keep references precise, it is always wise to check for past, alternate, and corrected names of any new plants you get by checking on http://bromeliad.nl/taxonList.php, the 'Taxon List', and following the name through all it's changes.
Some species have been swapped around between Tillandsia, Vriesea, etc, some have new genera groups.
Here is a table of some of the latest Tillandsioideae DNA re-groupings, as supplied by Derek Butcher 01/02/17, from Barfuss."
Note: see end of this page for generic definition of the new genus Goudaea, Bt W.Till & Barfuss.
There are 8 tables below.
The first two are new names for Tillandsia/Vriesea species, then consequential name changes for 'T/V Cultivars'. (Feb. 2017)
These are followed by Orthophytum/Sincoraea species, then consequential name changes for the 'Cultivars'. (March 2017)
These are followed by Cryptanthus species (Sept'2017). The resultant 'Cultivar/Bigeneric' changes not yet available.

Genera Changes: Species: Orthophytum / Sincoraea March 2017.
Reference: BSI Journal Vol.66(1) pp.6-19 (Jan-March, 2016). Re-establishment of Sincoraea (Bromeliaceae). R Louzada & M Wanderley.
From Geoff Lawn ... "Only these 11 Orthophytum species are reclassified as Sincoraea species--all are "sunburst" types with sessile inflorescences (no stem or peduncle), in contrast to the "pendunculate" (visible flower stem.) of other species in the genus Orthophytum.
A key to Sincoraea species is presented in the BSI Journal, botanical descriptions of all 11 species and their synonyms. Because a number of sunburst types have been discovered and described in the last 20 years or more, botanists have gotten a better idea of how best to classify the various clades of 57 species of Orthophytum + 11 Sincoraea species.
Herb Plever has written a good summary of the logic behind these changes in the March 2017 issue of 'BROMELIANA' published by the New York Bromeliad Society.

Diagnosis: A genere Vriesea Lindl. stigmate simplico-erecto, ovulis obtusis et petalis cucullatis differt.
Type: Vriesea chrysostachys E. Morren = Goudaea chrysostachys (E. Morren) W. Till & Barfuss
Description:
Plants epiphytic or terrestrial, usually medium sized, impounding rosette herbs.
Leaves mesomorphic; leaf blades lingulate, appearing glabrous.
Inflorescence simple or once branched;
floral bracts ecarinate, concealing the sepals completely; flowers distichously arranged,
Sepals symmetric; petals yellow or whitish, short connate at the base, tips cucullate, forming a tubular, hardly opened, actinomorphic corolla, bearing spathulate basal appendages, the appendage tips undivided and obtuse or incised and acute;
stamens shorter than the petals, included within the corolla;
filaments short adnate to the connate portion of the petals;
anthers subbasifixed;
pollen sulcate, exine reticulate, with a sulcus of the complex, diffuse type (subtype c);
ovules obtuse; style included within the corolla; stigma of the simple-erect type, papillose.
Distribution: Columbia to central Peru.
Etymology: Named in honor of Eric John Gouda (1957-) from Utrecht, The Netherlands, long-term researcher in Bromeliaceae.
Note: Two species and two varieties.

Proposed Viridantha genus.
Key to identify species in sub-genus Viridantha 2018. Translated by Derek Butcher.
Derek Butcher ... "The latest to come out of Mexico is that they still persist in treating them as Viridantha at genus level and not sub-genus level. However they have produced a very comprehensive paper on the subject (In Spanish!). It is an interesting group and several are being grown in Australia. The species are not easy to recognise but the new key gives a different approach to identification. You may notice that T. yagulensis has been promoted to species level from being a variety of T. atroviridipetala. You may also notice the new T. rzedowskiana but I haven't a clue as to its pronunciation !"

New genus Karawata by Derek Butcher Sept 2019
This new genus was created by J. Marciel et al. in Systematic Botany 44(3): 519–535. 2019
Phylogenetics work revealed that Aechmea subg. Chevaliera is not a monophyletic group. Seven species previously assigned to the subgenus form a clade with strong statistical support and in sister position to morphologically distinct members of other genera. Morphological and phylogenetic evidence segregates these seven species in a new genus named Karawata, which requires the following new combinations: Karawata depressa, Karawata gustavoi, Karawata hostilis, Karawata multiflora, Karawata nigribracteata, Karawata prasinata, and Karawata saxicola.
These days the trend seems to be to create new genera rather than trying to solve the problem at sub-genus level. This in turn creates problems with naming of man-made hybrids. In this case a quick check of the Bromeliad Cultivar Register has revealed that none of the 7 taxa have been reported. All named have impressive inflorescences but are large plants and take many years to flower which may be the cause of reluctance to hybridise.
Karawata multiflora by Oscar Ribeiro |
Hechtia changes by Derek Butcher. April 2019
The following has recently been published and somewhat concerned me. Based on the concepts of Barfuss et al (2016) they could have achieved similar goals by treating them as subgenera under Hechtia.
”The reestablishment of Bakerantha and a new genus in Hechtioideae (Bromeliaceae) in Megamexico, Mesoamerantha by Ramirez-Morillo, Romero-Soler, Carnevali, Pinzon, Raigoza et al in Harvard Papers in Botany 23(2): 301-312. 2018”
Eric Gouda is of the same opinion as me and this is reflected in detail given in The New Bromeliad Taxon list http://bromeliad.nl/taxonList.php
It may be of interest to note that Viridantha is treated at generic level by the Mexicans but is shown at subgenus level in The New Bromeliad Taxon list in line with Barfuss et al (2016)
Because Hechtia tillandsioides has already been involved in a hybrid mentioned in the BCR such a move will save a new nothogenus being coined.
Taxa involved are
Bakerantha caerulea
" " lundelliorum
" " purpusii
" " tillandsioides
Mesoamerantha guatemalensis
" " dichroantha
" " malvernii
While I believe the better solution is by using subgenera we wait for further publications which prove that genera status is the only option.
